About Scottish Women’s Walking Group

Scottish Women’s Walking Group is a friendly, community-led network of women who enjoy walking together and exploring the outdoors across Scotland. Founded in 2017 by Heather Dunnell, the group began with a simple idea: create a welcoming space where women could meet up for a walk, enjoy some fresh air, and feel less alone.

What started as a small idea has grown into a vibrant community of over 30,000 women who organise walks across Scotland through our regional Facebook groups.

At its heart, SWWG is about connection, company and the simple joy of putting one foot in front of the other.

A Community Built on Walking Together

Women join Scottish Women’s Walking Group for many different reasons. Some want to get fitter or spend more time outdoors. Others are looking for company on walks, new friendships, or the confidence to explore places they might not have gone alone.

Our members organise everything from relaxed local strolls to coastal walks, woodland trails, countryside rambles and hill days. Some walks are small and quiet, while others bring together larger groups of women enjoying Scotland’s landscapes together.

Many friendships have started on SWWG walks, and plenty of laughter has been shared along the way.

A Different Kind of Walking Group

Scottish Women’s Walking Group works a little differently from traditional walking clubs.

There are no official leaders or guided walks. Instead, the community is built around members organising walks themselves. If there is a route you enjoy, you can host a walk and invite others to join you.

This simple approach means walks vary widely in location, pace and distance, allowing members to choose what suits them best.

All walks are organised through our private Facebook groups, which connect members across different regions of Scotland.

A Welcoming Space for Women

One of the things that makes SWWG special is the supportive atmosphere created by its members. Many women arrive at their first walk feeling a little nervous, especially if they are coming on their own.

That feeling rarely lasts long.

Members often say that the group helped them rebuild confidence, improve their wellbeing, and discover parts of Scotland they may never have explored otherwise.

Whether you’re new to walking groups or have been exploring Scotland’s hills and paths for years, you’ll find a welcoming community here.

Our Philosophy

Scottish Women’s Walking Group has always been built on a few simple ideas:

• Walking should be accessible to everyone
• Fresh air and nature are good for both body and mind
• Community matters
• You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy the outdoors

Above all, SWWG exists to create a friendly environment where women can enjoy Scotland’s landscapes together.
